What the Best Part of Me Used to Be

The best part of me used to be my legs and now they’re shot. Knees, ankles, attacks where I go lightheaded and one leg, usually the left, feels weightless.

Whatever that uncharted part of us is that sends messages to the brain tells my brain: Deal with it! and my brain hops to and instructs me to light up another cigarette. Then it says, Here, write this down, and it showers me in Shards.

To give me some perspective my brain draws attention to my left wrist that sometimes locks up, then to my shoulder with the torn ligaments and to my gut full of plastic tubes and mesh.

No big deal! says my brain. I’ve got your back!

And then it lifts me high above love and understanding.
