off with his head

We’re all carbon copies of each other. Check out your chemistry. Look into the Big Bang. But the Mad Hatter and the Frankenstein monster could mate and change everything. It wasn’t what Mary Shelley and Lewis Carroll had in mind, but it could happen. One fiction weds another, births an offspring, and the laws of physics vanish.

Try to imagine what such a hideous creation would look like. Close your eyes and concentrate. Can you see it? Is the specter rising out of the mist, the child of the Mad Hatter and Frankenstein?

It’s beyond our wildest dreams — how frail the workings of our carbon-based imaginations!

But look! Coming this way in a new top hat, stiff-legged and wall-eyed and moaning “Off with his head!” … the future of the human race.
