The Stuff of Disdain

Chicken-fried
steak with
brown gravy.

Pinched scrawl
on a
napkin.

Secret longings
seeping out
in a
restaurant.

One of
these days
they’ll
make up
a retroactive
law to
deal
with him.

Enemies will
become allies
the world
will unite
& he’ll
be shaped
into an
arch villain
in clay,
everyone’s
enemy.

Then how
he escaped
their notice
for
so long
will give
rise to
suspicion.

The alliance
will splinter
& he’ll
be forgotten
as the
wars begin
anew.

You may
wonder why
he takes
such risks.

It’s because
he knows
he’s
unfathomable,
the stuff
of disdain.
