I’m not on Facebook. I don’t have a smart phone. I do have a computer that I use mostly like a typewriter, but it is connected to the Net, which is how I move Shards around to an email list. Other than that I Google a little for information and have a couple of bookmarks that I never use. And yet even with this minimal amount of involvement, when my computer crashed, I experienced withdrawal.
I’m a long way from the Mimeo Revolution that Booklist once called me the king of and that most people living today never heard of; a long way from stick-shift cars, dial telephones plugged into wall jacks and manual typewriters plugged into nothing.
Something crucial’s been lost, but disconnecting from the Net won’t change that.
I feel like Geronimo just after taking his last scalp.
