the handful

The Handful

Don’t expect
a return
from your
investment
if you’re
a poet.

A poet
doesn’t invest,
a poet
divests.

A poem
is an
outpouring
of a
fine-tuned
mind, a
stripping
naked of
the soul.

Of course,
as Leonard
Cohen said,
there are
only a
handful of
real poets,
the rest
are phonies,
& he,
said Leonard,
is one
of them.

He actually
said that!

Wrote it
down in
a poem!

Or what
would have
been a
poem
until he
said that,
because it’s
not true.

A poem is
always true.

More than
that it’s
irrefutable.

It’s no
easy task
to divest
yourself
of the
irrefutable,
which is
why there
are so
few real
poets.

Getting the Message Across

A rant
can’t hold
a candle
to a
good
one-liner.

Preparing for the Next War

Cowboys shooting
balloons off
of red
safety cones
down on
the rodeo
grounds,
preparing
for the
next war.

Letting Go

Bitterness is
easier to
let go
of than
sorrow.

well-heeled zen

Well-heeled Zen

I can’t
imagine what
it must
be like
to come
out of
a Zen
monastery
& discover
someone’s ripped
you off
for five
million dollars.
