Loners
Loners usually
cross paths
with other
loners
they can
run with
for awhile
but somewhere
along the
line they
avert their
eyes on
meeting &
continue on
alone.
From then
on out
there’s no
turning back.

Someone in
the neighborhood
has a
pet pig.
It’s tiny
& black
& full-grown,
a special breed.
Yesterday it
got loose
& went
running down
the street,
stopping to
wag its
tail at
everyone
it met.
Children came
running out
of their
houses &
the little
black pig
rushed to
meet them,
standing on
its hind
legs &
nuzzling them
with its
snout.
The children
cried out
with glee
& danced
around
the pig
holding hands.
Then the
animal control
wagon showed
up &
shot
the pig
with a
stun dart
that
laid it
out cold.
They put
it in
a cage
& hauled
it off
for extermination.

The subjunctive
mood is
for people
who are
afraid to
look life
in the
eye.

Enough past
fades away
& you
begin to
realize you’re
making life
up as
you go
along.
Which means
one of us
is not
real.

The world is
crawling with
lightweights
loaded down with
bad karma.

Give up
the ghost &
watch the
vapor rise.
