moments of truth

MOMENTS OF TRUTH

1.

A shimmering
cup of tea
chattering on a
saucer
as an
earthquake
rumbles thru
the valley.

2.

The way your wife
in the
community pool
looks up at the
star swimmer
poised on the
high board
for a dive.

3.

An alcoholic
cornered in an
intervention
by people who
can’t meet
his eyes &
talk nervously
about denial.

4.

The woman outside
the dance hall
smoking a
cigarette,
talking about
her right
to abortion,
the hostility
on her face.

5.

Men with
tiny enameled
American flags
pinned to their
lapels,
screaming
love it or
leave it
at a
black man
as they
drag him
from his
counter stool
& throw him
to the floor.

meeting women

Meeting Women

When I was
young &
lonely I’d
sit in
dark movie
theaters &
listen for
women who
laughed when
nobody else did.

Then I’d move
closer to
where they sat.

money makes the world go round

Money Makes the World Go Round

Doing readings
is the
worst hot dog
in the
pot Bukowski
once wrote
me &
then he
flew off
to Paris
to do one.
