amsterdam

Amsterdam

When I was a
young soldier
in the Netherlands
I drank free beer
in the Amsterdam
Heineken’s Brewery
reception hall
after the tour
had ended &
three tours later
I was still there &
got asked to leave.

I wandered along
the canals until
I was far from
the heart of the city
& then sat
on a park bench
until sunrise.

a child of gravity

A Child of Gravity

I’m not a
pogo stick.

I’m not a
high-dive
dandy in
skin-tight
trunks.

I’m not a
Pentecostal
convert with
his eyes
rolled back,
looking for
God inside
a snake.

I’m a
child of
gravity.

Gravity doesn’t
suck you
up it
slams you down.

You don’t
plummet when
you jump
off a
bridge the
ground
rushes up
to
meet you.

Gravity is
God’s glue.

Take this
as gospel
& go
out &
change
the world.

america takes care of her vets

America Takes Care of Her Vets

I drove
36 miles
to the V.A.
clinic in
fog on
icy roads
to let them
draw blood.

On the way
back out
the door
an old
woman on a
folding chair
offered me
stale fig newtons
& a
6 oz. paper
cup of
tepid coffee.

a touch of spring

A Touch of Spring

In the
flower bed,
green cotyledons
are ramming
their way
up thru
last year’s
brown leaves.

The blind
dog sniffs
them out
one by one
& inhales
their color,
her tail
wagging gently.

accidental suicide

Accidental Suicide

That’s
when you
cut yourself
ear to
ear while
shaving.
