Write This Way
Occasionally
what I
write coincides
with what
people think
& then
they say
why don’t
you write
like this
all the time?

Just when
Ground Control
has thrown
in the
towel on
Major Tom
his spacecraft
comes swinging
around Venus
& there
he is
loud & clear,
singing
a repertoire
of Little
Richard songs.

When’s the
last time
you saw
someone
whip out
his piano
while sitting
around a
campfire?

Lima beans
from Chile
anchovies from
Brazil,
wild horses
on the
Pampas,
Humpty Dumpty
took a spill.
Out poured
all the secrets
that mother
locked away,
the ones about
your father
who didn’t
let you
have your say,
the times
you were
alone at
night &
half the
reasons why,
the things that
made you bitter,
the things that
made you cry.
And with this
information
you were
free to
start anew,
but did you
little buckaroo,
or did you
bury what
you knew?
We all know
the answer —
wild horses
on the Pampas,
Humpty Dumpty
took a spill.

He pretends
his life
hasn’t been
ruled by
the paralysis
of indecision.
He pretends
it’s not
too late to
start over.
He pretends
he’s preparing to
rectify things.
He keeps
showing up
for auditions
but leaves
before his
name is
called.
He rides
the bus home
& pretends
his fellow
passengers
sense what
he could
have been.

Enlightenment
comes like a
punch in
the face
or not
at all.
