a long life II.

A Long Life

Pigeon-toed
diphtheria.

Acne with
an outburst
of resentment.

Shattered knee
caps, busted
collar bone,
a head
full of
migraines.

So much
sickness &
deformity,
pneumonia mumps
scarlet fever
whopping cough
& more still.

The long
nights of
anxiety.

There’re
no reward
for such
suffering
except a
honed instinct
for survival.

Survive past
a certain
point &
you become
immune to
to cancer.

He should
have been
dead
long ago,
said the
analysts,
but there
he stands,
cleft tongue
& all.

guess who’s coming to dinner

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

Sometimes I
feel like
I live
in a
space capsule
that
circles
the earth.

They bring
me back
down for
Christmas &
Easter give
me a
place at
the table
& ask
how it
is up there.

Different
I say
& they
go back
to talking
about the
NBA
playoffs.

what comes next

What Comes Next

The age
of man
is coming
to a
digital end.

We live
our own
definition
of insanity.

We gnaw
the toes
off of hope,
poke the
eyes out
of reason,
soil the
nest
of love.

We can’t
be stopped.
Even our
brief glimpse
of the
ultimate
didn’t turn
the tide.

We’ll disappear
down a
wormhole
of conjecture.

What
comes next?

Something beyond
our capacity
to dream,
beyond our
lip-service
morality.

The face
of God
will fill
the night
sky &
Zero,
the root
equation
for our
snappy demise,
will strike
us down.

apologies to the muse

muse

Apologies to the Muse

What a
fool I
was to
think I
could ever
make a
compromise with
my muse,
all tangled
in snakes
wearing
brass armor
her blood like
hot mercury
lacerated
green eyes
nine-inch nails
her heart
run thru
with spikes
& her
laughter like
thunder
because of
or in
spite of
it all.

a writer’s dream

fe99cd9b8fe63807cb82e65b9eda013c (1)A Writer’s Dream

Bukowski would
write whatever
he damn
well pleased
& when
he had
a big
stack he’d
hand it
over to
John Martin
& Martin
would make
a book
out of
it.

It doesn’t
get any
better
than that.
