the stuff of disdain

The Stuff of Disdain

Chicken-fried
steak with
brown gravy.

Pinched scrawl
on a
napkin.

Secret longings
seeping out
in a
restaurant.

One of
these days
they’ll
make up
a retroactive
law to
deal
with him.

Enemies will
become allies
the world
will unite
& he’ll
be shaped
into an
arch villain
in clay,
everyone’s
enemy.

Then how
he escaped
their notice
for
so long
will give
rise to
suspicion.

The alliance
will splinter
& he’ll
be forgotten
as the
wars begin
anew.

You may
wonder why
he takes
such risks.

It’s because
he knows
he’s
unfathomable,
the stuff
of disdain.

sameness

why

Sameness

If you
say the
same thing
over &
over is
it really
the same
thing?

If you
forget what
you said
& then
say it
again without
realizing it
is it
the same?

What do
people mean
when they
say,
“It’s all
the same
to me”?

What do
people mean
who say,
“It’s the
same old
story”?
Is it
the same
same old
story for
all
of them?

People
who say,
“It makes
no difference”
are really
saying
“Everything’s
the same”
but they’ll
never
admit it.

You can
spot them
by the
frown on
their faces.

dead numbers

Dead Numbers

The phone
numbers of
six people
who are
now dead
are logged
on my
phone.

If I
were still
drinking I’d
call them
drunk at
two or
three in
the morning.

But I’m
not still
drinking
& all
I do
is pull
up the
numbers
every week
or two
& stare
at them.

Kinds of Pain

Certain kinds
& degrees
of pain
make it
impossible
to be
humorous.

Other kinds
butcher dignity.

For some
pain the
only up
side is
good drugs.
