Man’s Best Friend
A dog
will chase
a ball
regardless
of who
throws it.

Everyone here
who experiences
relentless
anguish
raise your
hand.
You two
at the
back who
didn’t raise
your hands,
please leave.
You’re in
the wrong
room.

I can’t
recall exactly
when all
hope died
inside but
maybe it
was as
recently as
4 a.m. this
morning in
my sleep
just before
the northern
summer sun
began
to rise.

Like a
slow
gray mother.
Like a
black cushion
closing in
from all
sides.
Your mind
empties,
washed out
& tepid.
The lilt
leaves
your voice.
“Hush now,”
says death.
“Hush.”
Things fade
into seamless
repetition.
You slide
into
capitulation.

We carry
our humanity
strung around
our necks
on coarse
twine
like a
pane of
cracked glass.

Absolute silence
& then
strike like
a cobra.
