message in a bottle

Message in a Bottle

Consider yourself
chosen,
that’s why
you found
the note
in the
bottle.

Smash the
bottle
against a
rock but
don’t read
the note —
it wasn’t
meant to
be read

It was
put there
just to
get your
attention.

ownership

Ownership

People who
own more
than they
can use
own something
that’s
not theirs.

lost earring

Lost Earring

Long-ago
lovers who
are now
grandmothers or
dying of
cancer keep
drifting back
into my
life, looking
for that
lost earring.

pledging allegiance

Pledging Allegiance

Hope springs eternal
like a
Bouncing Betty
in the jungle &
rips the
green growth of
your dreams to
shreds.

But not
to worry,
back home
there’s a
corporate government
that although
it skimped on
your flak
vest has
saved you
a place
under a bridge
once the
V.A. sets
you up
with artificial
legs &
turns you
loose again,
a place
where you can
sleep in a
stove crate &
chow down at
a soup kitchen.

The Motherland
is there
for you,
soldier boy,
defender of
the free
market &
all our other
cherished freedoms.

not dying young

Not Dying Young

I suppose
I could have
died young
but I
didn’t &
here I
sit with
tiny breasts
missing teeth
wrinkled skin
& a
fierce look
in my eye.
