the fruition of paranoia

The Fruition of Paranoia

Imagine my
surprise when
on the
advice of
a friend
who’s being
treated for
schizophrenia
I sliced
open my
ballpoint with
a razor
& found
a mini
transistor.

Less than
a minute
later they
kicked in
my door.

togetherness

Togetherness

People think
you’re anti-
social if
you won’t
run in
a pack
& howl
at the
same moon.

the dance of life

The Dance of Life

Consider yourself
a sugar cube.

Consider life
a fish
bowl full
of water.

Ka-plunk
& the
process begins.

Death sweetens
life.

But what
about the
fish in
the bowl?

How much
sugar can
it tolerate
before it
goes
belly up?

Of course
I’m speaking
metaphorically,
but so what?

Play it
out.

Along comes
a sweet
little girl
barely touched
by life’s
waters.

She scoops
the fish
out of
the bowl
with a
tiny net
attached to
a tube
of metal
about the
length of
a chopstick.

She lays
the fish
on a
napkin &
stares
at it.

Without having
the words
to express
it she
realizes
the fish
is the
same dead
as alive,
except for
motion.

She realizes
that life
is motion
& stands
very still,
wondering
if she
is dead.

She is
four
years old.

She taps
the side
of the
bowl with
her finger
& the
water ripples
with the
dance
of life.

life’s playing field

Life’s Playing Field

Happy days
are here
again but
nights are
still howling
black pits
of dread.

But are
these truly
happy days
or just
vast expanses
of emptiness?

Is that
what it’s
come to,
that emptiness
can pass
for happiness?

A curse
on those
who have
a certified
name for
this precarious
arrangement of
days & nights,
a curse
on their
fat
well-financed
existence
carved from
the flesh
of the
distant pain
of others.

There never
was happiness
in my life.

There were
upheavals of
ecstasy brought
on by
savage youth
& glimpses
into crevices
of beauty
& surges of
make-believe.

But that’s
all gone
now, a
little trick
that time
plays.

Things grow
jumbled &
night spills
into day
& death
comes on
in a
rising tide
of increments
until it’s
leveled life’s
playing field.

They’re not
coming
for you.

They’re
waiting
for you.
