The Fruition of Paranoia
Imagine my
surprise when
on the
advice of
a friend
who’s being
treated for
schizophrenia
I sliced
open my
ballpoint with
a razor
& found
a mini
transistor.
Less than
a minute
later they
kicked in
my door.

People think
you’re anti-
social if
you won’t
run in
a pack
& howl
at the
same moon.

Consider yourself
a sugar cube.
Consider life
a fish
bowl full
of water.
Ka-plunk
& the
process begins.
Death sweetens
life.
But what
about the
fish in
the bowl?
How much
sugar can
it tolerate
before it
goes
belly up?
Of course
I’m speaking
metaphorically,
but so what?
Play it
out.
Along comes
a sweet
little girl
barely touched
by life’s
waters.
She scoops
the fish
out of
the bowl
with a
tiny net
attached to
a tube
of metal
about the
length of
a chopstick.
She lays
the fish
on a
napkin &
stares
at it.
Without having
the words
to express
it she
realizes
the fish
is the
same dead
as alive,
except for
motion.
She realizes
that life
is motion
& stands
very still,
wondering
if she
is dead.
She is
four
years old.
She taps
the side
of the
bowl with
her finger
& the
water ripples
with the
dance
of life.

They’re not
coming
for you.
They’re
waiting
for you.
