I’m close to finished. Close to singing like the lost bird of paradise. Close to slamming down the last period and going out like stale bread.
You ask me why. I knew I should have kept my mouth shut. Where were you when it rained fire and brimstone? When the earth opened and swallowed the dogs? When the communion wine spilled on the altar’s white linen? When the page turned and the words vanished?
Ask me something else. Ask me when’s the next bus to Topeka. Ask me if I lied to the popcorn vendor. If I fell into darkness and sprang up again like a puppet. If I rejected sweet love.
No one sheds tears for what’s really there.
