born into silence

Born Into Silence

The leaves
have turned.

The first
old woman
has fallen
on ice.

The air
crackles with
marching band
music.

Pumpkins rot
on doorsteps.

The suicide
rate edges
toward Christmas.

The circus
folds its
tents &
heads south.

A small
town in
Nebraska is
struck down
with Shingles.

Barack Obama
roles over
in bed
& says,
“Hey, baby.
You awake?”

& on
the day
the time
changes,
every child
born the
world-over
will be
born tongueless.
