the numerology of payback

The Numerology of Payback

“Nein!” she cried out,
but he did it anyway.
He was a soldier &
she was a
child of the enemy.
He didn’t care
that she was
only nine.

Afterward her
tender years
tipped upside down &
triplicated into sixes.
She went down the
path of evil
on Bremerhaven’s
red-light streets,
hellbent on payback.

the rewards of growth

The Rewards of Growth

You finally
find a way
to remain
friends with
a woman who
left you &
as a
reward you
get to
water her
plants when
she goes
on vacation.

the meaning of words

The Meaning of Words

He’s a
retired linguistics
professor with
Alzheimer’s
three deranged
children &
a wife who
laughs hysterically
at everything
anyone says.

He walks
for hours
around &
around the
junior-high
track in
baggy
sweat pants an
Eddie Bauer
jacket &
one of those
Australian
rimmed hats
with a
chin strap.

He seems
relieved
now that
the words have
left him.

the dismantling

The Dismantling

The beginning
of time
the end
of days
a false
diagnosis
thrombosis
triptophane
sodium pentothal
your grandmother’s
still urgent
sex drive.

The call of
the wild
wild thing
you make my
heart sing a
little off
key perhaps
because of
the mild
stench from
the marsh.

But stench
can never
be modified
so why
do I
say mild &
why am I
singing to
start with
while the
sky grows
dark?

Crazy for
love wild
for affection
the good
ship Lollipop
Willy Wonka’s
Chocolate Factory
the castrated dream.

I’m talking
into a
mirror like a
one-legged parrot
I’m nailing
hope to
my death wish
like a
spaghetti
string yo-yo
love pinched
like a pea.

I’ve scoured
the plate
left not
one shred
of evidence.

Yours is
the last
hand I’ll
hold &
then comes
the dismantling.

the alphabet of enlightenment

10 Nov 1995, California, USA, USA — Leonard Cohen Meditating at the Mount Baldy Zen Center — Image by © Neal Preston/Corbis

The Alphabet of Enlightenment

Nothing
the Beatles say
carries me from
A to Z

Leonard Cohen,
on the
other hand,
says here,
step up to
LMNOP &
let me
show you a
thing or two
about QRST.
No mention
of A & Z.

But he’s wearing
monk’s robes &
Florsheim shoes,
which makes me
just a
litte uneasy.
