Living Long
Live long
enough &
you’ll be
betrayed in
every
aspect of
your life.

Live long
enough &
you’ll be
betrayed in
every
aspect of
your life.

I used
to run
five miles
a day
just to
keep my
energy right.
Now I
take two-
hour naps.

There’ve been
times the
moon turned
blue &
red of
course countless
times red
once pitch
black &
green on
occasion.
The moon
was sent
by God
to keep
an eye
on us
& it’s
grown skeptical.
When we
landed on
the moon
jumping around
like monkeys
& babbling
about giant
steps for
mankind well
that was
the last
straw.
There are
a trillion
planets in
the universe
with God’s
children on
them &
earth
is not
one of them.

Just before
we die
all the
people we
ever were
(& there
were quite
a few
of us)
come
alive again.
This may
be what
kills us.

Let us
gather by
the river.
Read scripture,
chapter &
verse,
in a
hysterical
booming voice.
Sex in
the reeds
after the
river baptism
of the
latest
saved soul,
her sheer
gown still
dripping wet,
clinging to
her breasts.
Drink wine
from the
chalice.
Cane the
children.
Then back
to your
everyday
life,
furious
with certainty.

What happens
after a
time is
the whole
thing comes
crashing down
not the
lifetime of
one small
crash after
another the
big crash
the crash
you can’t
pick yourself
up from
the crash
that sums
you up
& makes
you realize
there was
no point
where it
all went
wrong it
was always
wrong &
there’s
no fixing
it never
your life
was a
waste of
giving up
& then
trying again
until the
bottom
dropped out
& the
roof
crashed down.
Some people
carry on
past this
point.
Most don’t.
