a topsy turvy world

A Topsy Turvy World

They make
glasses that
turn your
world
upside down
but if
you wear
them long
enough the
world goes
rightside
up again.

Then when
you stop
wearing them
the world
goes upside
down for
awhile until
it goes
rightside up.

If you
try this
be sure
not to
mention it
to anyone &
pretend that
nothing’s happening.

after the race

lonely

After the Race

Phase two
of the
donkey show.

Voices from
under the
floorboards
in a
house with
no
crawl space.

Seasoned
perfection
with
no moving
parts.

Life after
the spoils
are
sub-divided,
like plots
of land
speckled with
grave stones.

The loneliness
of the
long-distance
runner starts
when the
race is
over.

the next black friday

The Next Black Friday

Next time
Black Friday
rolls around
I’m going to
push a
cart loaded
down with
books
up to
Target &
try to
sell them
to people
camped out
around the
block
waiting
for the
sun to
rise so
they can
buy a
refrigerator.

another day on the hill

Another Day on the Hill

Outside the
van the
wind is
blowing the
hail in
at a
slant &
the sun
shining thru
it has
kicked up
a rainbow
& an
old woman
with thick
glasses
in an
all-pink
outfit is
grinning down
into her
smart phone.

battle-scarred shark

Battle-scarred Shark

Sixty years
old at
the peak of
a lifetime
of spiked
pain he
hammered himself
into 160
pounds of
steel &
went break
dancing.

Six Japanese
girls
circled him
where he
danced alone,
like minnows
around a
battle-scarred
shark.

don quixote unveiled

Don Quixote Unveiled

It’s taken
74 years
for the
veils to
fall away
& there
I sit,
a frail
Don Quixote
on a
broken-down
nag, my
lance pointed
at the
sky in
heartbreaking
defiance.
