Some People

Some people
are out
of order
some are
out of
line some
out of
luck some
out to
lunch some
outside
looking in
some holding
all the
cards some
somewhere else
some stay
put some
panic some
keep tabs
score
keep on
keeping on
come &
go take
the wrong
turn pay
the price
plead innocent
drop out
drop in.

Stay away
from
these people.

starting a rock ‘n’ roll band

Starting a Rock ‘n’ Roll Band

I’m going to
start a
rock n
roll band
where all
the musicians
are over
seventy.

We’ll call
ourselves the
Ancient Mariners
& play
behind
chicken wire in
Texas bars.

getting high in the modern world

Getting High in the Modern World

Having run
out of
ground to
walk on
cities around
the world
have begun
going vertical.

There’s a
building in
Dubai the
Burj Khalifa
that’s over
a half
mile high
& in
Hong Kong
there are
interlocking
vertical communities
the residents
of which
never get
lower than
five storeys
off
the ground.

Some see
this as
a tribute
to man’s
ingenuity.

Meanwhile the
polar ice
continues
to melt
& the
land crumbles
into
the sea.

Peers

Found scrawled
in magic
marker
on a
concrete pillar
of a
freeway overpass:

Peers?
What peers?

On the Right Track

If what
you write
seems like
something
no one
will understand,
you’re on
the
right track.

nothing else to learn

Nothing Else to Learn

Try it
one more
time.

Swing out
of the
tree like
you mean it.

Fess up
that you
want
to be
found.

Put it
down in
black &
white, bury
it in
the dark
soil of
rejection.

Still nothing.

Remember when
you were
a kid
& spent
entire
Saturdays
alone
in a
tree?

Do you
really think
there’s
anything left
to learn
after that?

Climb back
up in
that tree.

Never come
down again.
