Step Out of the Car

The cop
who pulled
me over
was surly
& young
& when
my papers
were in
he said
“What are
you doing
out this
time of


“Pardon me?”
I said &
he said,
“You heard me.”


“I thought
you were
here to
protect citizens,
not harass
I said
& he said
“Step out
of the
car sir.
Keep your
hands where
I can
see them.”
